Northeast Corridor Designated the 11th and Final Rail Corridor
March 14, 2011
The Northeast Rail Corridor (NEC) has been formally designated as the eleventh and final High Speed Rail corridor by Department of Transportation Secretary, Ray LaHood. This enables the Corridor to apply for federal money for infrastructure improvements, including the $2.4B rejected by Florida Governor Rick Scott.
The money has been highly sought after all over the nation, with the NEC demand culminating into a February 28th letter to Secretary Ray LaHood urging the administration to redirect the rejected Florida funds to the Northeast Corridor.
The letter was signed by senators Lautenberg, Carper, Blumenthal, Cardin, Coons, Gillibrand, Kerry, Lieberman, Menendez, and Milkulshi. The designation is an encouraging sign that their voices are being heard.
